Seeing Through Trauma: Workshop with Sudanese Refugees

Over March 6-8 we held a workshop with Sudanese refugees. We explored the profound impact of war—not just the sounds of missiles but the enduring echo of loss that spans generations. We uncovered stories of loss: not just for land or homes, but for childhood, safety, and life as it once was.

This session shed light on a crucial truth—trauma doesn’t simply end with the war. Its remnants persist in every child and adolescent who grows up amidst the ruins. Together, we acknowledged that this enduring pain is summed up in a single, powerful word: loss.

Yet, this workshop was not solely about grief; it was also about HOPE!

We transitioned from pain to resilience, from loss to the possibility of healing. Through storytelling, connection, and empowerment, we honored the participants’ pasts, embraced their present, and envisioned a future where joy and peace can flourish.

“My brother died in 2020, and I still feel deep sorrow and don’t know how to deal with my grief. Before he passed, he told me that I should become the head of the family because he was the eldest. After his death, I couldn’t fulfill that role. So, I’m not just grieving for my brother who’s been gone for four years — I also feel very guilty that I wasn’t able to take on the role he asked me to. Now I’ve developed diabetes, and I still don’t know how to cope with the sadness. For the first time, I have hope to move forward and heal.”

Key Takeaways from the Workshop

  • Acknowledging Grief and Trauma: Participants shared and reflected on the personal and collective losses that stem from conflict. This opened the door to meaningful conversations about the ongoing impact of war.

  • Building Resilience: We explored the journey from pain to hope, focusing on the strength required to rebuild and heal.

  • Empowerment through Healing: Healing is not about forgetting; it is about learning to live again. Together, we explored strategies and tools for processing emotions and fostering self-confidence.

  • Unity and Support: The sense of community and mutual encouragement among the participants was a powerful testament to their shared strength and determination to move forward.

This workshop served as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. It was not just an opportunity to reflect on the tragedies of war but to spark hope and inspire the path toward healing.

Please continue to support us in this life changing work. We can’t do this without you.
